Michael Fassil

Michael Fassil is an Ethiopian, born and raised in the capital, Addis Ababa, from a neighborhood called 22 Mazoria. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in Architecture and Masters Degree Urban Design. As an artist, Michael wants to share the untold stories of his people and country through photography. Unfortunately photography is not a tool that is highly used in Ethiopia to display politics, social life, equality, and culture. Therefore, he makes it a point to cover these areas with his work. In 2014, Michael’s work was exhibited at the Addis Foto Fest 2014.

Michael is the founder of Pixel Media – a startup print shop that began in 2015.

The Lost Memories

Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, has in recent years become a site for road and building structure developments. A recently completed infrastructure is the Addis Ababa Light Railway line. This new development affects many Addis residents in many ways.

There have been many losses due to this development, but I just wanted my project to focus on showing what happened at a specific site after a photo studio was demolished. I had known this photo studio for the last 20 years, yet, with only a three day warning it became bare land.

Photographs can be seen scattered all around the demolished structure. When I saw each photo it was as if I could remember the exact moments in which they were taken, even though I was never a part of them. I felt the pain of those who lost the photos, who lost the memories….
