Michael Metaferia
ETHIOPIA
Influenced by a family who made their living in hospitality and tourism, 23-year-old Michael received some training which brought him closer to the art of photography. Sensing a gap in proper advertisement-worthy pictures to promote Ethiopia’s tourism sector, Michael set out to take pictures to start a promotional campaign of his country. Ever since his initiative, he has been taking photos on trips he has taken across the nation. This in turn made him realize he has the potential to take amazing photographs. Over the years, Michael has developed his skills in photography and continues to employ those skills to enrich his collection.
Look in the monkey mirror and think again!
With a close look through his camera, Michael explores the surprising similarities between humans and animals. In this collection, Michael takes a close look at primate behaviors and highlights commonalities with humans. While at first, he looked for superficial, anatomical similarities, his intimate photos show some apes in the Bale Mountains National Park, and the city of Axum, display emotions of anger, delight, affection and meditation, showing we are not so different after all and are very closely related to our animal kin. He captures the animals’ gestures, expressions and emotions that almost mimic that of human beings.
