Hana Gamal
EGYPT
Hana Gamal, also known as hanaperlas, is an Egyptian photographer and visual artist. Hana studied and graduated from the American University in Cairo with a double degree in Mass Communication and Media Arts, and Psychology. Her photography venture began in 2011, and since then, it became her voice and greatest passion in life. After graduating, she decided to follow her passion and pursue her career based on what feeds her soul and gave herself the independence and freedom to create. Hana’s visual approach is an anthropological/psychological one. Her work focuses on human connections, behavior, and emotions; shedding light on the genuine humanity of everyday life. This pluralist approach in her photography is a result of her studies in Journalism, Psychology and Visual Arts which stresses the complex nature of the photographic message. Her work has been recognized and featured in various international publications, and exhibited in Cairo, Ireland, and London.
We’re All Fugitives
On 25th January, a revolution was the spark that ignited my passion for photography, and since then, my camera became my best and closest companion that helped me rediscover my country and get closer to my people. During all those years after the January 25th revolution, wandering around the streets that are filled with stories in every corner, trying to find answers to all my endless inquisitions, I discovered one thing, we’re all fugitives. Fugitives from political, economic, and/or social injustice; fugitives from lost hopes and dreams; fugitives from melancholic memories; fugitives from unpalatable realities; fugitives from our fears, from the void; fugitives from love; fugitives from our lives, and maybe ourselves too. We are all fugitives.
