Dariush Kiani
IRAN
Dariush Kiani was born in 1971 in Tehran, where he lives and works today. He joined the Javan (youth) Cinema Association of Tehran in 1992 while studying photography at Azad University. He then worked as an assistant to the noted industrial photographer Farhood Haghi before leaving to start his own studio. In 2001 he and his friend Jalal Sepehr founded the Fanoos Studio and until 2010 worked on documenting many factories in Iran. Kiani believes “Although this kind of work is very attractive, it’s hard to apply high level photography techniques to extremely harsh industrial environments and to create something both artistic and commercial, but the difficulties give way to pleasure after the project has gone well: the experience of creating each work usually fades away and the art stays on forever. Such commissions afford the photographer a wide range of experience and encountering different people and places has made me a better person. Every single project has enriched my personality” From 2003-2011 he blogged on commercial photography, the only Persian language only blog covering the subject. He has taught photography, held workshops in art schools and colleges, and served on the board of various organizations in Iran focused around photography. Art is for him not an objective, but a means to communicate around the world.
