Bemnet Fekadu
ETHIOPIA
His higher education in architecture from Addis Ababa University awakened his sense of intellectual curiosity about art, identity, history, and the representation of current events in a variety of media, including photography. Bemnet, born in 1993 in Addis Ababa, uses photography as his most expressive tool. Bemnet found refuge in photography and he used his camera as an escape to make it through the dull years of college. As Bemnet’s interest in telling stories through his camera grew stronger, his interest in architecture faltered. In contrast, he intensified his participation in photography trainings and workshops. Bemnet’s pictures focus on landscape, streets, and portraits. His works have been featured in several photo stages including AFF and Blank Wall Gallery.
ERA
Bemnet’s ERA collection explores what Addis Ababa stands for as a city. As a toddler, he had a chance to travel across Ethiopia and get a sense of the different life styles and characters of the towns he visited. Bemnet understood each town’s unique social life, urban character and design. Addis Ababa’s one of a kind architecture caught his attention the most and dedicated this collection to explore the city he was brought up in. Through the process and the pictures, Bemnet engages in the search for the city’s identity.
