Born in Khartoum Sudan, Alaa Gaafar is a photographer and an architect with enthusiasm for documentary, photojournalism and storytelling. In her work she focuses on telling stories of people, places and time. She aims to shine light on society’s issues by putting them on a frame for everyone to see the big picture. She believes that photography is an equivalent to cave paintings and temple walls inscriptions. It is our modern way of documenting history and culture, imprinting on the fabric of time and telling the next generation that we were here.
The (Challenge) women’s soccer team is the first and only female soccer team in Sudan. Just like their team name these ladies are literally challenging the stereotypical image of Sudanese woman.
Despite all of the physical and emotional obstacles, they are also overcoming obstacles and social norms of the conservative Sudanese society crushing gender and social barriers.
