Addis Foto Fest

The Addis Foto Fest (AFF) was established in 2010 by award-winning photographer and cultural entrepreneur, Aida Muluneh. The festival is organized by Desta for Africa Creative Consulting PLC. AFF is a biennial international photography festival held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. It has previously featured exhibitions, portfolio reviews, conferences, projections and film screenings in many different renowned venues. It is also the first and only international photography festival in East Africa.

The AFF has been recognized as one of the leading photography festivals in Africa and in the world; the next edition of AFF 2016 takes place in Addis Ababa from December 15- 20, 2016. A special feature of the fourth edition is the incorporation of the first AFF Photography Awards and the launch of the annual event “Photography in Ethiopia” (PIE).

The AFF 2016 collection features images from emerging and established photographers from Africa, Asia, the Americas, Middle East, and Europe. The collection represents 134 photographers from 40 countries from around the world with images from various styles such as photojournalism, fine art photography, and archival photography.

Aida Muluneh

Founder, Director

Born in Ethiopia in 1974, Aïda left the country at a young age and spent an itinerant childhood between Yemen and England. After several years in a boarding school in Cyprus, she finally settled in Canada in 1985. In 2000, she graduated with a degree from the Communication Department with a major in Film from Howard University in Washington, D.C. After graduation she worked as a photojournalist at the Washington Post, however her work can be found in several publications. Also as an exhibiting artist, a collection of her images can be found in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art and the Museum of Biblical Art in the United State. She is the 2007 recipient of the European Union Prize in the Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie, in Bamako, Mali. As well as the 2010 winner of the CRAF International Award of Photography in Spilimbergo,Italy. She also has a book published by Africlia in Brussels, Belgium, titled “Ethiopia: Past/Forward” which is a coffee table book that reflects her vision on reconnecting to Ethiopia through memory and nostalgia. She is also the founder and director of the first international photography festival the Addis Foto Fest as well as Fana Wogi a yearly open call supporting contemporary artists in Ethiopia. Aida continues to curate and develop cultural projects with local and international institutions through her company DESTA (Developing and Educating Society Through Art) For Africa Creative Consulting PLC (DFA) in Addis Ababa.

Betelhem Hussein

Operations Manager

Born and raised in Harrar, Betelhem has a degree in marketing and has worked for several advertising companies in Addis Ababa before joining DFA. She has been with DFA since the beginning of the company, serving as a key figure in its growth. She currently serves as the Operations Manager of DFA, leading several projects, from the coordination of the Temslat book to planning exhibitions for the US Embassy, Mexican Embassy and Georgian Embassy; she is also the liason for DFA between the following ministries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Tourism and Culture and the Ministry of Communications. Betty also oversees the overall financial management, planning, and event coordination of DFA as well as the planning of the Addis Foto Fest exhibition in Addis Ababa.

Eden Adnew

Operations Assistant

Eden Adnew was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She completed high school and is now studying Theater at Addis Ababa University. Eden works as the Operations Assistant at Desta For Africa Creative Consulting PLC.

Tarekegn Tesfaye

Graphics Designer

Tarekegn Tesfaye was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He stays busy working at Desta For Africa Creative Consulting PLC and working as an IT Technician at St. Mary University all while studying Computer Science at St. Mary University in Addis Ababa. Tarekegn became fascinated with photography through his years of experience with images as a graphic designer. He enjoys spending his free time doing street photography as well as taking portraits. Tarekegn has been developing his skill in photography for the past three years and is pleased to have been selected as a member of PIE in this fourth edition of the Addis Foto Fest.

Sara Sem

Business Development Coordinator

Born and raised in Addis Ababa, Sara left for the United States after high school in 2003 to pursue her higher level studies. She earned her degree in business administration and finance in the US and has been working in the communications and media sector in Addis Ababa since her return in 2012. She has a vast experience working with newspapers, magazines and various publishers (such as Addis Fortune Newspaper, Selamta – the Ethiopian Airlines in-flight magazine and a mixture of internal publications for Addis Ababa University). Sara currently works as the business development coordinator at DFA where her responsibilities range from developing new business models, building up new and existing relationships with clients as well as exploring expansion avenues for the company.

Ainslee Alem Robson

Writing, Multimedia & Communications Manager

Ainslee Alem Robson was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. During college, Ainslee spent a semester studying philosophy at Université Paris IV Sorbonne, and studying Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies in Rabat, Morocco through the IES Study Abroad program. After graduating from The College of Wooster with a BA in Philosophy and in French, Ainslee moved to Addis Ababa where she now works as the Writing, Multimedia, and Communications Manager at Desta For Africa (DFA) Creative Consulting PLC. She enjoys her involvement in photography at DFA and plans to continue to develop her career as a writer.

The First Addis Foto Fest

The first Addis Foto Fest was way back in 2010. We started with 22 fantastic photographers in our first edition.

 

The Second Addis Foto Fest

The second Addis Foto Fest we grew to have 36 amazing photographers! This second edition took place in 2012.

The Third Addis Foto Fest

The Third Addis Foto Fest we are proud to have grown even bigger. We exhibited the works of photographers from all around the world. For the first time, we had photographers from each continent! We had a total of 80 photographers in our third edition in 2014.

Photography In Ethiopia (PIE) made its debut exhibition in Brooklyn, New York at the Photoville festival in September of 2015.
